CHARACTER TRANSFER PROCESS, STEP-BY-STEP
Moving day has arrived! Stake a new claim and build your legacy!
Ultima Online Character Transfer now available!
Now is your chance to move a character from one shard to another and rejoin old friends or make new ones. With our new Character Transfer service, you can move a character and his or her possesstions across shards.
To help you understand how Character Transfers work, we’ve created this step-by-step guideline. It tracks the transfer process from start to finish, explaining each stage and giving tips to help you make sure your transfer is as smooth and pleasant as possible.
Note: Characters can be transferred across from one shard to another, not from one game account to another. The character will remain owned by the same account even after the transfer is completed.
- Obtain Character Transfer promotional code
For $19.99, you can buy a Character Transfer code from www.uogamecodes.com. You’ll receive your code via e-mail. Be sure to write it down. Once you have your code, please follow the rest of these instructions.
- Log into Ultima Online
Before starting the Character Transfer process, make sure you read all available documentation on this process and understand what will have changed after it’s completed.
Once a transfer has been initiated, it cannot be stopped. You will need to complete the transfer to some shard. This is entirely hard coded and may not be cancelled in any manner by the in game GMs. Nor can the transfer be "redirected" to another character. If you accidentally start the transfer on the wrong character, you will need to complete the transfer, and then transfer back if so desired. PLEASE make sure that you are transferring the correct character to the correct shard!
Once you understand the transfer process, log into UO with the character that you want to transfer. Make sure the character and all its belongings are properly prepared and move it to a safe log-out location.
Safe log-out locations for character transfers don’t include camping areas, but they do include the following:
- An inn
- A house that your character owns
- A house that has your character on its Co-owner list
- A house that has your character on its Friends list
- Select “Promotional Code” from the Help menu
Open the Help menu from either your paperdoll window or the menu bar at the top of your screen. You’ll see a “Promotional Code” listing at the bottom of the Help menu. Select that option to proceed.
Caution: Once you enter your Character Transfer promotional code, you will not be able to customize a house nor enter any other promotional codes until the transfer is complete.
- Enter your promotional code
You’ll be presented with an entry form area that will ask you to enter your Character Transfer promotional code. Make sure you enter the code exactly as given to you—including capitalization and hyphens! Enter no other text in the box aside from your promotional code.
- Follow the in-game instructions to start the transfer
When the transfer starts you’ll be squelched, frozen, hidden, and unable to be harmed by any character or creature. Your clothes and equipment will also be removed and placed into a special “transfer crate.” (You can read more about the transfer crate below.)
Before the transfer can actually take place, the following conditions must be satisfied:
- You character must be in a safe log-out area
- Your character cannot be sitting on a mount.
- Your character cannot be dead.
- Characters with “Young” status cannot be transferred. (If you wish to transfer this character to another shard, remove your young status by saying “I renounce my young player status” and begin again.)
- Your character cannot transfer if in possession of a Town Sigil.
- Characters that have stabled pack animals holding items cannot initiate a transfer.
- You will not be able to transfer from (or to) Siege Perilous or Mugen.
- You must have at least one open slot available on the destination shard.
- You cannot transfer your character if is in disguise, polymorphed, wearing savage paint, or in special necromancy form.
- A character that is poisoned cannot initiate the transfer process.
- You cannot transfer a character suffering from “Yew plague.”
- A character that is paralyzed cannot be initiate the transfer process.
- Your character cannot be transferred while it is customizing a house.
- Characters cannot enter the transfer process while casting a spell.
- You must wait two minutes after engaging in combat before you can initiate a character transfer.
- You must wait two minutes after committing a criminal act before you can initiate a character transfer.
- You cannot initiate a transfer if your character is in a party.
- A character that is transporting a guildstone cannot be transferred.
- You cannot transfer your character to a shard that is currently running a different version of the server. (These differences are often temporary, and on such occasions we ask that you please wait for your shard to be updated to the same version of the server or select a different destination shard.)
- Character transfers cannot occur while the transfer server is unavailable.
It’s also a good idea to make sure that all the items you plan to transfer are ready—located on your character, in your backpack, in your bank box, etc. If you start the transfer process and realize you forgot something, don’t worry. You’ll be able to cancel the process at any time and restart it at a later date.
Once the transfer process has begun, your character will enter a non-playable mode. You won’t be able to interact with the world, but you’ll be able to make your transfer selections and confirm the items that will be transferring with your character.
- Select a destination shard
Select the destination shard—nearly all shards will be available for transfers, but you’ll need to have an open character slot on the new shard for the process to work.
If a shard is currently unavailable for character transfer, you will be unable to select it.
- If a shard is experiencing temporary downtime, you will not be able to select it until that downtime has ended.
- Sometimes your original shard and destination shard may be running two different versions of the server code, and this will disallow transfers between these two shards. These version differences are often temporary, but you may need to wait anywhere between a few minutes and several days for both shards to have the same version of the code.
Some transfer options, such as transferring to (or from) Siege Perilous, Mugen, or any test shard, are permanently disallowed.
- You cannot transfer your character to or from Siege Perilous or Mugen. (Transferring characters from shards with the standard rules to these specialty shards would cause game balance issues.).
- You cannot transfer your character to or from any Test Center shard, including Test Sosaria, once the service is live.
- Transfers from any worldwide territory to any other worldwide territory will be possible.
- Confirm everything before the transfer happens!
Your character may have collected a lifetime of custom gear, bonded pets, crafting resources, rares, keepsakes, and other items. With a few exceptions, you will be able to take your belongings to your new home.
When the character transfer process is begun, all of the items that will be transferred will appear in a special “transfer crate.” This will allow you to visually verify that the items that you want transferred will be transferred.
There will be several containers within the transfer crate. Make sure to open and examine the contents of each container, and verify each pet, before you accept the transfer. You will not get another opportunity to do so, nor can items be added if you find them missing afterwards—once you finish the transfer, there’s no “undo” if you realized you forgot something behind on the old shard!
Containers within the transfer crate that you will need to review
- “Your Backpack” (a backpack containing the items form your character’s backpack)
- “Your Worn Equipment” (a small, wooden box containing the items worn and held by your character)
- “Your Bank Box” (a silver chest holding all the items from you characters bank box)
- “Your Stabled Pets” (a wooden crate containing all the pets your character currently has stabled)
- “Your Controlled Followers” (a grey backpack holding 1 statuette for each non-stabled pet that is being transferred with your character)
If you suddenly realize you don’t have all the items you planned take during the transfer, you can cancel the process and attempt it again at a later time.
Obviously confirming what items will be transferring and what may be staying on the original shard is important, but don’t forget to double-check that you’ve chosen the correct destination shard.
What can transfer:
- Your character, including:
- Name
- Appearance (skin, hair, facial hair)
- Stat & skill points
- Reputation (Fame, Karma, murder counts)
- Virtue points and Virtue title
- Any custom title your character may have (such as those awarded during some past OSI events)
- All the “monster points” your character has accumulated by participating in champion spawns, as well as any special champion spawn title your character has achieved
- The current status of any quest in which your character has been participating
- Everything your character has equipped (both wearing and holding)*
- Your character’s backpack*
- Your character’s bank box*
- All of your character’s stabled pets (Note: If you cannot control a stabled pet, it will transfer to the destination shard but cannot be removed from the stables until your character has the appropriate control slots available.)
- All your character’s pets that are within the immediate vicinity, and their associated contents* (Note: Temporary “followers,” such as hirelings, escorts, and animated dead, will not be transferred)
* This includes most of the equipment and items, including (but not limited to):
- Artifacts
- Scrolls of Power
- Bulk Order Deeds and Bulk Order Deed Books
- Faction silver and items
- Veteran rewards and gift items (including holiday gifts, Personal Bless Deeds, etc.)
What cannot transfer:
- Houses, their secured items, their vendors , and their barkeeps will not be transferred to the new shard.
- The house will remain in its current state on its original shard, and your account will remain its owner. As with normal housing rules, you can acquire another house on the new shard, but please remember that acquisition of this new house will condemn the original house.
- If you are listed on a house’s Co-owner or Friends list, you will be removed from it.
- All legacy “house deeds” will be converted into house placement tools.
- You cannot transfer your character if it is currently in a party.
- If your character is part of a guild, it will be removed from that guild, even if you are the guildmaster. (You can join or start a new guild as normal after the transfer to the destination shard)
- If your character is in a Faction, it will be removed from that Faction, even if a Faction officer. (You can join a Faction as normal after transferred to the destination shard)
- You cannot transfer your character if it is in possession of a Town Sigil.
- Companion and Volunteer status (the latter applicable only to our Asian region, which still maintains Volunteers)
- Bracelets of Binding and Balls of Pet Summoning will have their links cleared upon transfer to the new shard. They will not be automatically re-linked upon transfer to the destination shard; you will have to re-link them yourself after the transfer is complete.
- Bulletin Boards will have all of their current messages deleted (but can continue to be used as normal on the destination shard).
- You will have to recreate any custom game macros for that character after the transfer to the new shard.
- Make the transfer happen
Before you actually make the transfer happen, it may comfort you to know that you can cancel transfer at any point during the process and restart at a later date. However, when you finally get to the last transfer menu and are absolutely sure you’re ready, press the “Transfer Me!” button to move your character and its items to the new shard.
At the point of transfer, you’ll be automatically logged out of your original shard. For a very brief period of time—only a few moments—you’ll be unable to log into either the original or destination shard, with any character. You’ll be able to log into and play any character on other shards as while your first character is being transferred.
Once the transfer is complete, the old version of your character will no longer exist on the original shard.
- Log into your new shard
At the earliest opportunity, log into the destination shard and confirm that the transfer occurred and your character is now in its new home.
Your character will randomly appear in one of the “newbie character starting locations” in the Trammel facet of the destination shard, which is typically near an inn. Characters that are murderers (a.k.a. “Reds”) will instead appear in Buccaneer’s Den in the Felucca facet.
For your convenience, a few things will automatically occur when your log in your character the first time after transfer.
- The container in the transfer crate labeled “Your Bank Box” will be gone from the transfer crate. Your original bank box will be automatically unpacked into your new bank box, and be accessible via normal means.
- The wooden crate labeled “Your Stabled Pets” will be gone from the transfer crate. Your stabled pets will be automatically unpacked and placed in the care of local stablemasters. You will be able to access them on this shard as normal.
- Empty your transfer crate!
You can access your transfer crate at any time by choosing the “Open Transfer Crate” option from the context menu on your character.
- You can click-and-drag each item out of the “Your Backpack” and “Your Worn Equipment” containers.
- You can use the context menu of the “Your Backpack” container to automatically unpack its contents into your new backpack.
- You can use the context menu of the “Your Worn Equipment” container in the transfer crate to automatically re-equip any items you were wearing/holding before the transfer.
- You can retrieve any pet that remains in your transfer crate by selecting the “Unpack Pet” option in that pet’s context menu.
Starting from the first time you enter the destination shard, you will have 7 days to remove all items from your character’s “transfer crate.” Once this time period has expired, all items that remain in the crate will disappear forever upon your next log-out and cannot be recovered.
One word of caution: If at any time you attempt to unpack an item from your transfer crate, you will not be able to do so if that action will overload your character.
- Have fun on your new shard
The character transfer process is complete. In addition to having fun playing in your new home, we ask that you keep the following points in mind:
- Make sure to remove all the items from your transfer crate within 7 days.
- Don’t forget that if you place or are traded a house on your destination shard, you will condemn any other house you already own, on any shard.
- If your character had any custom game macros, you’ll need to recreate them after the transfer.
